30-year-old American overpowered the diminutive Errani, a French Open finalist and top-ranked doubles player in the world, registering 38 winners, including nine aces. Williams cut loose with a squeal of joy after ending the 64-minute match with a second-serve ace.
Azarenka won 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 over No. 3 Maria Sharapova to reach her first United States Open final and second career Grand Slam final. The brutal two-hour, 42-minute match finished with a 74-minute third set.
Williams’ entire match took 10 minutes less than the third set of Azarenka-Sharapova, as she bludgeoned No. 10 Sara Errani 6-1, 6-2 in just an hour and four minutes. Williams hit 38 winners to only 6 for Errani.
